Skate Kitchen came about when director Moselle accidentally met some girls with skate boards on the New York subway. The film was initially thought of as a documentary, but she changed her mind and rather made the girls play versions of themselves in a fictional film. Skate Kitchen can be reminiscent of Kids, from the 90s, but only in the realism in the portrayal of the group of kids. The nihilism in Kids is here replaced by a need for community in order to survive as a teenager on the streets of New York City. The result is therefore a much more optimistic, not to mention entertaining, film. The main character, Camille, is thrown into a new environment where she curiously tests her own limits, if it so comes to drugs, sex, love or friendship.
