João Pedro Rodrigues’ The Ornithologist is a film so intensely beautiful it simply has to be experienced on the big screen. The director's (O Fantasma, To Die Like a Man, Last Time I Saw Macao) latest film brings us along for a surreal journey about the power of transformation, and about how things are never really what they seem on the surface.
We meet an ornithologist travelling in a kayak through the gorgeous Portuguese wilderness. Quickly a parallel universe appears where he meets a couple of Chinese tourists with a thing for bond- age, a mysterious sect, Jesus and armed, topless amazon women. Despite these adventurous encounters, the film even- tually boils down to something as simple as a story of a man who deep down only wishes to find out who he is. Besides his love for bird watching, of course.
The Ornithologist is a modern odyssey that has been praised at film festivals around the world, and it won the Best Director award at Film Festival in Locarno last year.
