Blue Sunshine

Synopsis

High school teacher Bhanu has been on hormone treatment for six months. She has support from her friend Haritha, but has been hiding her transition from her colleagues and family.
When Bhanu’s parents start preparing an arranged marriage, she gains the courage to come out and start her new life. The school administration refuses to acknowledge Bhanu as a woman, and when she stands up for Karthik, a non-binary student bullied for their feminine demeanor, the two are left to deal with the building problems themselves.

Writer-director Samyuktha Vijayan, who also stars as Bhanu before and after, delivers a touching and insightful drama about transgender experiences in Indian communities. An understated and nuanced feature film debut not to be missed.
