Ephemera
On her last night in Shanghai, Chinese-American actress Asher asks out her hip-hop dance teacher Tori, sparking an electric, city-wide romance that must end by sunrise.
Rather than framing their relationship through the familiar trope of “forbidden love”, Ephemera places the joy and exhilaration of a new romance at its centre. In doing so, the film gives Asher and Tori space to define their own emotional worlds, free from the assumptions so often projected onto queer Chinese women.
