Biography

Carmel Alabbasi (they/them), a Palestinian visual artist, has shaped a dynamic path enriched by diverse academic pursuits and career experiences. Beginning with a foundation in journalism and social anthropology, their journey led them through the realm of photography, and currently they are pursuing an MFA at KHIO. Their creative practice spans photography, video art, sound, writing and experimental films.
Carmel explores concepts of absence and disappearance, illuminating the intricate interplay between spaces, bodies, and objects entangled within the complex web of colonial and patriarchal heritage. They grapple with portraying the notion remaining after the systematic erasure of people, spaces and places, haunted by memories and identities that were once held.
