Alpha
Belgium · France – 2025
France, 1980s. 13-year-old Alpha lives alone with her mother. After getting high and close to unconscious at a party, she comes home with a rough tattoo on her arm. Her mother, a doctor, fears the worst. A mysterious disease spreads in the world. It’s blood borne and the infected gradually transforms into marble.
After the rumor spreads, Alpha is ostracized at school, while at home, she gets closer to her heroin-addicted uncle, Amin, who is constantly brought back to life from overdoses by his sister.
Julia Ducournau, director of the critically acclaimed cannibal tale "Raw" and Oslo/Fusion's 2021 opening film, the Palm d’Or winner "Titane", is back with an allegorical "body horror" drama about HIV and the stigma that comes along.
The film premiered in the main competition at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
