Feature narrative

The Bed Sausage

Die Bettwurst

Germany – 1971

Luzi is an elderly, bourgeois secretary who lives a beautiful and predictable life in the port city of Kiel. One day, Dietmar, a young unemployed man from Berlin, walks by. Both of them play through all the middle-class rituals they have learned through their education and the media. They go to a restaurant to dance, she shows him both her allotment garden and her photo album. After a night of love-making, he helps her vacuum. They celebrate Christmas together. Every moment. Together. Until Dietmar's criminal past catches up with him, and when Luzi is kidnapped, he has to make a difficult choice... Die Bettwurst is the first of two films about Luzi and Dietmar, and deals with the time before Dietmar comes out as bisexual - which should come as no surprise to anyone. Von Praunheim and both actors give us a master class in high camp in this wild social satire!
