The German director, writer and producer Rosa von Praunheim (1942 - 2025) was one of the most famous and influential queer artists / activists in the world of cinema. Perhaps best known in German-speaking countries, he ended up somewhat in the shadow of filmmakers such as Rainer Werner Fassbinder and John Waters, but von Praunheim was equally a pioneer – and an often controversial figure – in queer film, in addition to being one of the most influential figures in the New German Cinema wave.
As a co-founder of the modern gay movement in West Germany and Switzerland, he fought for visibility and normalization, and he was involved early in the fight against HIV and AIDS. In this program series, developed in collaboration between the Goethe Institut Norwegen, Cinemateket and Oslo/Fusion, we get to know a filmmaker whose early works are just as relevant, exciting and entertaining seen from today's perspective through four selected films.
With large doses of camp, impressive casts, and boundary-pushing and radical theses in his work, von Praunheim brought focus to queer culture and politics, and he is today considered one of the figures who redefined the international gay struggle since the early 1970s.
