My Beautiful Laundrette

United Kingdom – 1985

Omar's disillusioned and gin-drinking father wants his son to start studying. But first he wants him to get a job. Omar's uncle Nasser, who has become a wealthy businessman due to various shady affairs, puts him in charge of a coin-operated laundrette. Omar hires his childhood friend Johnny, who wants to get away from his nationalist past. At the laundrette, looking like a kitschy Hollywood palace, Pakistani Omar and English Johnny’s love affair blossoms.

The collaboration between writer Hanif Kureishi and director Stephen Frears led to several intense films set in a Britain in disintegration. Themes such as gay love and identity issues are presented with insight and humor - this is an absolute classic that is still as relevant, forty years on.
