Luca Guadagnino's latest film is based on the cult novel of the same name by William S. Burroughs. Lee has sought refuge in Mexico City, where he drinks from morning ‘til night. Alcohol is not the only vice he struggles with – he is also addicted to opiates.
After meeting Eugene at his regular bar, he falls hopelessly in love. They eventually start a kind of relationship, which is as desperate on Lee's part as it is distant on Eugene's.
Lee persuades Eugene to join him in South America to try the psychoactive drink yage (ayahuasca), which is supposed to give them consciousness-expanding, potentially telepathic, experiences. What follows is a dizzying hallucinatory sequence, beautifully choreographed by the Norwegian Opera House regulars, Sol Léon and Paul Lightfoot.
A hypnotic and beautiful, dark and painful, and extremely sensual and visually suggestive cinematic experience.
